Scott Beale

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Scott Beale is the founder of Millennial Politics.com, the author of an upcoming book on his generation, and the Mid Atlantic Director of Youth Venture, a national non-profit dedicated to social entrepreneurship He is a nationally recognized advocate for his generation, and experienced public speaker, and a published author on the topic of youth activism. Scott first became an advocate for his generation seven years ago when he started college.

As a freshman at Georgetown University Scott became active in student government. He helped organize three financial aid rallies at the U.S. Capitol to protest the cuts in federal financial aid proposed in the Contract for America. The rallies were attended by over 500 students from six local colleges and universities and included Congressional and Administration speakers. Federal support for financial aid was restored in the FY96 budget in part due to the efforts of Scott and his peers.

Throughout Scott’s sophomore year he remained active in student government and community service groups. He authored the Pledge for Community Service and later founded the Community Action Coalition, a volunteer advocacy student group. That spring, Scott traveled to Mostar, Bosnia to pray and work with Croatian and Muslim youths at a house called Mladi Most.

After returning to the U.S., Scott began volunteering with Rock the Vote (RTV). He helped created a group called Campaign Georgetown that went to the Youth Vote 96 Conference as well as the New Hampshire primaries to register students to vote. He then traveled to the Democratic National Convention with RTV. By Scott’s junior year, Campaign Georgetown had registered 1,000 students to vote in Washington, DC and organized the (first ever) successful elections of two students to the municipal government in November 1996.

In March 1997, Scott left school to work in Bosnia. As the youngest member of an advance U.S. State Department group, Scott became the Core Supervisor in Mostar with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), an intergovernmental organization responsible for elections in Bosnia. Fifteen international monitors and 30 locals were a part of Scott's team. With OSCE, he organized voter registration logistics in the war-recovering nation. Scott was the youngest Core Supervisor for OSCE from any country.

By graduation, both campus papers, The Voice and The Hoya, and the President of the University had recognized him as one of the "most prominent students on campus" for his leadership and student activism. He was one of eight students nominated for the school’s highest student honor, the Spronk Medal. After graduation, Scott was hired as a Legislative Assistant to Governor Tom Carper, then-chair of the National Governors’ Association (NGA) in his Washington, DC office. While Carper was chairman of the NGA, it was ranked as the 12th most powerful lobbying organization in Washington.

After three years with Governor Carper, Scott left to become the Associate Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at the White House in the final year of the Clinton Administration. In this capacity he worked with Governors and State Legislators every day responding to their concerns and promoting the President’s agenda. Due to his experience at the NGA, Scott worked very well with Republican, Democratic and Independent Governors.

In addition to those jobs and his own writing, Scott helped the best-selling authors William Strauss and Neil Howe research their most recent book, “Millennials Rising.” He has spoken at high schools, on college campuses, in the Capitol and in the White House. He is part of the leadership of Generation Rising.com, a generational site that complements his research. He is also a member of Youth Vote 2000. Finally, Scott is the founder of the 2100 Fund, a small nonprofit foundation that raises money for charities by hosting parties.

Currently, Scott is the Mid Atlantic Director for Youth Venture, a national non-profit which empowers young people with the opportunity to start socially responsible businesses.
