| Education
has become one of the most important political issues for politicians and
especially candidates. There is a feeling that the public school system
has failed and the government has sat by watching it decay. |
| As the sum total
of all school age children today, this is an important issue to our generation.
In fact, it has been ranked the
number one issue of visitors to this site. Millennials are particularly
concerned about school violence (see
Guns) and also zero tolerance policies in school. They want to know
if they can pray on football fields (see
Religion). They want school choice. They want access to technology.
They want to learn in schools and not in trailers with classrooms too small
for teachers to teach. Older Millennials want their federal financial aid
protected. |
|
| Some
say the debate is not over better facilities or more teachers, but rather
more flexibility and greater accountability. Many Republicans want to block
grant education bills and leave it to the states to decide what to do,
while many Democrats think that more money needs to be appropriated to
address the problems. The National Governors' Association has taken a position
that they want more federal money and are willing to become accountable
for the money and start producing measured results. But what does this
mean for our generation? Many of us see are schools as less violent than
before and a world of educational opportunity made available by technology.
How bad are the problems really? |
