Until Millennials Rising (Strauss & Howe, Vintage Books, 2000), the rise of America’s youngest generation had gone almost completely unnoticed in the media today. William Strauss & Neil Howe’s seminal work on the generation has generated public interest on the topic, but still many questions – particularly political questions - remained unanswered. Questions like: What are the political attitudes of the generation? What can we learn about this generation from the election of 2000? And finally, how will the values of this generation shape the country and the world?
Millennial Manifesto is the first book on the politics and activism of America’s youngest generation written by members of the generation. The book addresses the major political issues important to the Millennial Generation such as religion in government and the affect of globalization on society. Political trends and polling data are brought to life by the stories of my generational contemporaries. The book has stories of students mobilizing due to school violence and teenagers running for political office to preserve the environment. Collectively these stories tell the story not yet fully told about America’s Millennial Generation. The Foreword of the book will be written by William Strauss and Neil Howe, authors of Millennials Rising, and will provide a brief overview of the generation’s identity. The Introduction and Part One more fully introduces the reader to the generation and what forces have shaped its politics. Section Two of the book addresses the political issues of the generation and answers the following questions:
Finally, Section Three will analyze the results of the Election of 2000 and articulate the future political trends of the generation. These three sections will outline the political world of today’s youth. The book will illustrate that we are living in an era of change. The business world has been reshaped by the information revolution and our countries political institutions are about to be changed by a rising generation that has grown up in this new world. Millennial Manifesto has a fresh, unique, and much awaited message of hope and optimism for the country and also a word of caution about the potential downfalls of expectations not met. The market is saturated with books on GenXers and Baby Boomers, while it is void of first-person material on Millennials. There is a strong desire in society for a book that shares good news about young Americans and no longer debates GenX characteristics. As Strauss and Howe say in Millennials Rising, “today’s America reflects a broad national hunger for the rebirth of collegialism that Millennials are starting to provide.” (p.237) This book will fill that niche and convey the generation’s confidence for the future and the country. This book will be relevant to and benefit many in society, not just the Millennial Generation. Americans will learn more about their friends and relatives who are twenty five and younger. Educators will have a more precise understanding of their students by reading about their attitudes and points of view. Public officials will gain insight into where this country is headed. Millennials, who have mistakenly been lumped together with GenXers, will benefit from having their own opinions voiced. Society will benefit from a book that shows the promise of the generation and warns against the potential problems of it. This book will focus attention on the political issues of the generation, and will begin the dialogue about their views of the rest of the country. |
